It originally referred to ancient Roman public buildings, where courts were held, and they also served other official and public functions. The second-meaning refers to Christian basilicas, major church buildings which were patterned after the secular buildings of the same name. The third meaning refers to Catholic basilicas, church buildings which have been officially designated as basilicas by Papal authorities.
